Abstract

Abstract The removable partial dentures made during one semester in the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry, University of Helsinki, were studied with regard to the accuracy of the fit of the metal palatal plate against the palate of the master cast and the mouth. In every denture there seemed to be a gap between the plate and the palate, ranging from 0.09 mm to 0.68 mm on the cast and from 0.11 to 0.93 mm in the mouth. The inaccuracies could have been caused by the behavior and production of the refractory casts. Five identical refractory casts of a model simulating the upper jaw were ordered from 4 private dental laboratories. The laboratories proved to be unable to produce identical casts. The dimensional variability was great, the casts were distorted, and the influence of the special expanding liquid remained obscure.
