Abstract

Mapping levee lines is an important task for describing levee shapes. This letter proposes an efficient methodology for generating levee lines using the lidar data acquired in the Nakdong River basins, South Korea. The procedure for generating levee lines involves three main steps: (i) pre-processing for generation of the slope map; (ii) generation of the levee crown and slope planes from the slope map; and (iii) extraction of the levee lines located along the levee crown and slope planes. Accuracy assessment of the generated levee lines is implemented using the slope parameter. The experimental results show that the proposed method is efficient for identifying the levee lines located on steep terrain regardless of the object types on the surfaces, and not efficient for describing the levee shapes with flat terrain. In the future research, the other sources extracted from the high-resolution images would be integrated with the levee lines extracted from the lidar data to identify the levee lines located on both smooth terrain and steep terrain.
