Abstract

LARGE increases of plant growth in irradiated soils have been attributed principally to increases in available ammonium- and nitrate-nitrogen1 although the accumulation of nitrate in fresh and dry soils has not always been observed2,3. Experiments by Cawse4 have consistently shown substantial increases in nitrate when five fresh soils were incubated after treatment with 1.5–200×103 rads.
