Abstract

Evolutionary scenarios for the formation of some binary pulsars are discussed. (1) In relation to the origin of low mass X-ray binaries and binary millisecond pulsars, conditions for the occurrence of accretion-induced collapse of white dwarfs are examined. The outcome of the evolution of accreting white dwarfs is summarized as a function of accretion rate and the initial mass of the white dwarf. (2) In relation to the binary pulsar with a neutron star companion, some constraints on the progenitor system and on the asymmetry of the explosion are presented. The relation to Type Ib/Ic supernovae is discussed.
