Abstract

Abstract The author briefly traces the history of accreditation within the health field over the last half century with emphasis on the development of ambulatory accreditation programs. A comparison is made between the use of professional surveyors and practicing practitioners from the field. The relationship of accreditation to college and university health programs is explained with emphasis on the importance of recognizing the high quality care provided on college campuses, the availability of consultation to aid in improving the quality of services rendered, and the fulfillment of requirements for licensure and third-party payments. Finally the paper discusses the reasons why some health centers may postpone seeking accreditation.
