Abstract
The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) is a multidisciplinary society which believes that interdisciplinary cooperation is essential to achieve its goals of excellence in patient care, teaching, and research. This excellence has been developed in the several traditional vertical medical disciplines. These disciplines provide for the care of people with diseases ranging over the natural continuum from subclinical to critical illness. This traditional vertical approach to critical care focuses the most highly developed knowledge and skills of members of many disciplines on the needs of those most in need—the critically ill.
