Abstract

I grew up in an area of south London that once was Streatham Park. It was the country retreat of the Thrale family, who were leading lights in Georgian London society. The estate became a rural bolt-hole for their famous friend Samuel Johnson. This novel gives flesh to the bones of a tale I had been familiar with since childhood. It is a fictionalised tragi-comic portrait of the great man of letters and his complex association with the wealthy and influential Thrales.
