Abstract

In research laboratories, pregnant employees may be exposed to teratogenic materials that may cause harm to a developing fetus. More commonly, the pregnant employee may have anxiety about working with other materials that are known or perceived to be hazardous. Written guidelines ensure that a standard procedure is used in all cases. The employer must provide information regarding the materials of concern. The employee should be encouraged to consult with occupational health, safety, and toxicological professionals. The employee and her supervisor should discuss any concerns related to specific job tasks. Accommodations can be made to alleviate the employee’s anxiety. Documentation of employee-supervisor discussions emphasizes the employer’s resolve to allay employee worries during pregnancy.
