Abstract

The demand for enhanced automobile safety performance increases each year. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the factors based on the Japanese accident database compiled by ITARDA (Institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis). The ITARDA database has data for injury rates, seatbelt use rate by driver and age of driver involved in crashes, etc. for most vehicle models. This study focused on passive safety performance. Passive safety performance evaluated in JNCP was found to be more influential on fatal/serious injuries than on vehicle weight and the study determined that the rate of seatbelt use and passive safety performance should be improved in consideration of vehicle weight in order to reduce fatalities and injuries in the real world.
