Abstract

Elapid accidents are rare in Brazil due to these snakes' non-aggressive behavior and semi-subterranean habitat. The venom's action is mainly neurotoxic and, due to the risk of acute respiratory failure, is considered potentially severe. Symptoms occur within an hour after the accident and include sialorrhea, difficulty swallowing, flaccid paralysis, respiratory failure, and death. The diagnosis can be based on the presented clinical manifestations. Treatment, in most cases, is primarily supportive due to the lack of anti-venom serums for use in veterinary medicine. This work aims to report an elapid accident in a dog treated at a veterinary hospital in Florianópolis, SC (Brazil), presenting flaccid paralysis and subsequently evolving into respiratory failure and apnea. The promptness of care and the therapeutic approach used were essential for the significant improvement of the animal.
