Abstract

Aim: To identify the existing knowledge of young people aged 16–18 years about sexual health services in a rural area of Scotland. Background: Scotland has poor sexual health with a rising incidence of sexually transmitted infections, and some of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Europe, particularly in young people under 25 years of age. In rural areas in Scotland there remain challenges especially for young people in accessing sexual heath services, with issues linked to transport, anonymity and confidentiality. Method: An exploratory descriptive approach using quantitative survey design was used. Results: The results of this study suggested that young people’s knowledge levels were generally high with regards to accessing appropriate sexual health services. However, a link between poor sexual health knowledge of services and gender has been highlighted. Conclusions: Health promoters need to address the specific key issues in relation to gender-specific needs and access to sexual health services in rural areas remains an issue.
