Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to measure the barriers to breast reconstruction after mastectomy, with a particular focus on general surgeons in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This was an observational cross-sectional study conducted among general surgeons in Saudi Arabia from December 2022 to the end of June 2023. All participants completed a previously validated online self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire included questions about access to breast reconstruction. Results: A total of 190 participants were included, with almost half of them (44.2%) were younger than 30 years. Additionally, 51.6% participants were male. Further, results demonstrated that 48.9% physicians would always discuss the available options for breast reconstruction surgeries with all breast cancer patients, and 33.7% would always refer breast cancer patients to a plastic surgeon for consideration of breast reconstruction. In general, 68.4% participants in the current study had an adequate level of knowledge regarding breast reconstruction. Among the participants, 62.1% had a positive perception of breast reconstruction. Conclusion: This study underscores the significance of improving access to breast reconstruction in Saudi Arabia by addressing surgeon-related factors, such as insufficient expertise and negative attitudes. Efforts should be made to enhance the referral process for breast reconstruction, increase healthcare providers\' awareness about the benefits of breast reconstruction, and address negative opinions among healthcare professionals.
