Abstract

To understand access to addiction medications, it is essential to consider the role of private health plans and pharmacy benefit managers, which may use cost-sharing and administrative controls. We use 2010 data from a nationally representative survey of private health plans (n=351 health plans, 935 products; 89% response rate) to examine plans' management of addiction medications and how they encourage use of addiction pharmacotherapy. Addiction medications were rarely excluded from the formulary.
