Abstract

The acceptor properties of PCl3(cat) and PCl(cat)2(cat = O2C6H4) towards some Lewis bases have been investigated in solution by means of 31P n.m.r. spectroscopy. The compound PCl3(cat) is a better acceptor than PCl(cat)2, which is comparable with PPhCl2 studied previously. The cations [PCl2(cat)]+ and [P(cat)2]+ have been prepared for the first time; these species are extremely reactive, probably because of their strained geometries, and readily increase their co-ordination number. Several new solid complexes have been isolated, and further characterised by elemental analysis, i.r., and in some cases 31P n.m.r. and/or 35Cl n.q.r. spectroscopy.
