Abstract

Abstract This article compares songs in the bumba-meu-boi of Maranhão, Brazil, to reframe discussions of sotaque (“performance styles”). Songs structure performances and have a high symbolic value. Focusing on songs emphasizes the annual re-creation of performance styles and encourages further exploration of singing and songs as exemplars of ludic (cultural) capital.
