Abstract

The basic principles of linear accelerators, synchrotrons and storage rings, and of their main components are outlined. After a discussion of the performance and key components of hadron colliders, linear electronpositron colliders, and accelerator-based neutrino sources the paper concludes with a global overview of high-energy physics accelerators, in operation or under construction, and of the plans for future facilities.
