Abstract

The effect of viscosity on the propagation of acceleration waves of arbitrary initial form is discussed on the basis of Noll's constitutive equation for hygrosteric materials. Closed expressions are obtained for the variation in strengths of isochoric and irrotational waves, as these propagate into a uniform region. The special cases of an elastic solid and non-linear fluid are treated as limiting forms of the Noll equation.
