Abstract

We show that, in an ac‐driven spatially periodic Hamiltonian system, the width of the chaotic layer associated with a separatrix diverges in the adiabatic limit. A similar behaviour is observed for the layer of transient chaos in the presence of a weak dissipation. If noise is added, this mechanism may have as a conseguence that the noise‐induced transport is greatly accelerated by the adiabatic AC‐drive.
