Abstract

At the I. M. Gubkin Moscow Institute of the Petroleum Refining and Petrochemical Industry, over a period of more than 16 years, research has been performed in the field of petroleum asphalt production technology and product quality improvement. This research is particularly important, as the nationwide demand for these products is continually increasing. A pilot-plant continuous oxidation tower for asphalt production has been designed and constructed. This unit is being used to study the effects of feedstock type (crude oil and residual stocks such as vacuum resids, asphalt from deasphalting processes, etc.) and the effects of oxidation process conditions on the composition and properties of the asphalt products.
