Abstract

Summary form only given as follows. Spectral deferred correction (SDC) methods are high order time integrators that can potentially be applied to a wide range of plasma physics problems. Of particular interest is addressing the temporal multi-scale nature exhibited by two-species plasmas. Herein, we report on the application of SDC methods to a particle formulation of the Vlasov-Poisson system. Specifically, we consider the two-stream instability, as particle trapping is known to be an issue for temporal acceleration methods. We utilize several numerical techniques including: (1) regularizing the Coulomb singularity, (2) adaptive particle insertion, and (3) a treecode algorithm to accelerate the computation of the electric field. The impact of combining adaptive particle insertion with SDC methods is explored, and simulations are presented for the instability of collisionless electron beams.
