Abstract
The acceleration of zone-2 distance protection scheme typically depend on the use of a communication channel. Communication based zone-2 protection scheme may not be feasible in case of degradation or failure of communication channel. This paper presents an accelerated distance relay zone-2 protection scheme using traveling wave arrival time information available at local terminal. Acceleration of distance protection zone-2 is done by using the information of faulted line. Faulted line is identified using first three arrival times traveling waves recorded at local terminal. The proposed technique is tested with PSCAD/EMTDC simulations with different fault types, fault resistances, and locations. The performance study confirms that the technique accurately identifies the faulted zone. This method is used as accelerated zone-2 distance protection scheme for EHV transmission lines when the communication link is failed or not available.
