Abstract

Surveys conducted since 1972 by a spot check technique have covered a large number of reefs within and beyond the area in which large populations of Crown-of-thorns starfish ( Acanthaster planci (L.)) were reported in the period 1966–1972. Results obtained by the spot check technique have been compared with those obtained by towed observers and the comparison indicates that the method offers an adequate and economical means of obtaining an index of A. planci populations over large areas of reef. On evidence to date A. planci infestations appear to have been mainly confined to the region 14°–20°S. The situation can change rapidly and continued monitoring is recommended; surveys of the Swain Reefs Complex and of the area north of 12°36′S are planned for late 1975.
