Abstract

Acadia is a name that has been used for nearly 400 years in the area of the Maritime Provinces. There is strong evidence that it derives from Archadia (Arcadia), given by Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he sighted an ideal landscape described in classical literature. Cartographers applied it to a region south of New France. In the early 1600s Sieur de Monts found it to be a useful designation for a new colonization scheme between New France and the Spanish possessions. The Micmac termination – Acadie ('occurrence place') appears to have no bearing on the origin of the choronym.
