Abstract

In a striking new media campaign, a young girl smashes her kitchen with a frying pan to show the dangerous effects of heroin ... a father misses an opportunity at the break-fast table to talk with his son about drugs...and actor Carroll O9Connor pleads with parents to get between your kids and drugs any way you can. While these messages are critical to curbing youth drug use in America, the campaign fails to mention the drug most commonly used and abused by young people —alcohol. The Academy has joined a public health coalition, which includes Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the American Public Health Association and others, to urge Congress to include alcohol in this national anti-drug media effort.
