In 2001, the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (now the Department of Science and Technology) commissioned the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) to review the nation's current state of research publishing across all scholarly disciplines, and to recommend and support a new strategic framework for South Africa's research journals. The findings and recommendations are contained in the recently published Report on a Strategic Approach to Research Publishing (Pretoria: ASSAf 2006). The Report presents a wealth of detailed information on a very broad front, and the account in the paragraphs that follow is necessarily selective and summative. ..
