The article presents the facts about life and career of an outstanding Russian transfusiologist and neurosurgeon, an excellent clinician, a talented health offi cial, a well-known public character, the creator of an original scientifi c school of surgery, an academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, an honored science worker of the RSFSR, a Lenin Prize laureate, lieutenant general of the medical service, Professor Vladimir Nikolaevich Shamov.
