Abstract
Health communication is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary area of study concerned with the powerful roles performed by human and mediated communication in the delivery of healthcare and in the promotion of health. The modern field of health communication began to formalize in the early 1970s with the introduction of the Health Communication Division as part of the International Communication Association (ICA). The ICA Health Communication Division was the first formal organizational unit representing the emerging field of health communication and has been an essential part of the robust development of health communication research and education.
