Abstract

Academic health sciences libraries affiliated with U.S. medical schools offer a wide range of resources and services to the general public. Most offer access to their collections and to some or all of the computers in the library to search for medical/health information on the Web. Trained library staff will generally assist public patrons with searching library databases to find information to answer complex questions. The National Library of Medicine and the Medical Library Association direct public consumers to reliable Web sites and also to local and regional academic health sciences libraries where they might receive assistance and/or instruction in searching the Web more efficiently and effectively.
