Abstract
Church's intellectual community. The Vatican has moved to obtain the dismissal of the distinguished Swiss theologian Dr. Hans Kiing, Professor of Dogmatic and Ecumenical Theology at the University of Tubingen, and is investigating Dr. Edward Schillebeeckx, the internationally renowned Belgian theologian. It is in the context of this increase in ideological tension within the Church, affecting particularly its academic institutions, that we reprint this article by the Reverend Charles E. Curran, professor of moral theology at the Catholic University of America. The article first appeared in The Furrow, a Catholic journal in Ireland, and is being reprinted as well in the Jesuit publication, The Catholic Mind, whose cooperation in facilitating this republication is deeply appreciated.
