Abstract
This contribution examines the legal issues of academic freedom both in its individual dimension and on an institutional level. The research is based on a series of decisions from the European Human Rights Court and the Constitutional Courts of Belgium, France and Germany, as well as from the US Supreme Court. Without neglecting cultural differences, the authors try to define some guidelines for a balanced interpretation of the individual freedom in teaching and research that is compatible with the challenges of a modern university.
