Abstract

Academic freedom is a multi-faceted concept used to protect universities, faculty members and students from interference by the government and by one another. A growing trend is the use of academic freedom to protect students’ speech and to protect students from offensive or abusive speech of faculty members. This article will explore the nature and parameters of academic freedom in the classroom, where the interests of faculty members and students may collide. After a review of the law and cases on the topic, this article will discuss the difficulty of parsing the contours of free speech in the college classroom.
