Abstract
Interdisciplinary collaboration and project management were compared for academic interdisciplinary research projects operating under the aegis of permanent institutes, adaptive institutes, and inde pendent projects. The findings reported here, from a nationwide sample of interdisciplinary research projects, do not support the argument that institutes necessarily increase cross-disciplinary collaboration or the management of interdisciplinary research.
