Abstract

SUMMARY The history of Acacia ataxantha DC. and nature of the species was discussed. Field sampling was undertaken in Natal to establish the range of variation within, and among, populations. Parameters for all measurable morphological characters revealed the presence of continuous variation within, and among, these populations. The distribution and nature of the morphological variation in the remainder of Africa was considered. The presence of several morphological tendencies in the southern part of the species range in Africa were noted but, for reasons enumerated, no infraspecific categories were maintained within A. ataxacantha, variety australis Burtt Davy being relegated to synonymy.
