Abstract

Abusive head trauma (AHT) is the leading cause of trauma deaths in infants (Gerber, 2007). AHT is most common in the first year of life; as many as 95% of severe head injuries in the first year of life are due to inflicted injury (Duhaime et al., 1987; Ettaro, Berger, & Songer, 2004; Hadley, Sonntag, Rekate, & Murphy, 1989; Jaspan, Griffiths, McConachie, & Punt, 2003; Keenan, Runyan, & Nocera, 2006; King, MacKay, & Sirnick, 2003; Ludwig & Warman, 1984). Head injury is the most common cause of death from physical abuse; one study found that 36 of 42 abuse deaths were due to AHT. It is estimated that up to 28/100,000 infants sustain AHT in the first year of life, with a mortality rate of 21.4%.
