Abstract

Under investigation is a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with variable dispersion and nonlinearity coefficients in inhomogenous fiber optics. Through extending Darboux transformation method, an analytic breather solution with two free functions is obtained for the first time. Furthermore, abundant optical breather structures can be excited by setting the variable coefficient functions. Linear, periodic, V-type, U-type and S-type breather structures are observed and demonstrated. These breathers are novel and interesting.
