Abstract

The management of substance misuse and dependence is a societal problem that everyone has responsibility for not just health professionals, politicians and drug users. This lecture will describe the development of drug treatment services over the last 15–20 years and the crucial role that pharmacy has played in those services. Importantly it will not just focus on pharmacy services but will cover the role of specialist drug treatment services, general practice and even the general public. This broader perspective is crucial as it will demonstrate that pharmacy as a profession has really taken on this patient group in a professional and (generally) non-judgemental manner. Thus it is worthy of some reflection as to why community pharmacy has succeeded in this clinical area when it finds input and service development in other clinical areas more challenging and less welcomed.
