Abstract

Background: -Tic disorders are commonly considered to be childhood syndromes. Tic disorders experienced during adulthood are largely considered to be persistent tics from childhood. As such, tic disorders newly presenting during adulthood have only occasionally been described. Adult-onset motor tics are described in patient with schizophrenia in the following case report.Aim: -To discuss adult-onset tics in patient with schizophreniaCase report: -Mr. A 42 years old male presented with complaints of suspiciousness, hearing voices, irritability and decreased sleep for 3 years and involuntary, recurrent stereotyped movements in neck muscles for 1 year. There is history of cannabis intake but dependence was not present. On mental status examination his affect was irritable and had delusion of persecution and grandiose ideas and was having 3rd person auditory hallucinations. His routine blood investigations and neuroimaging were within normal limits. He was started on tab olanzapine titrated up to 20 mg bd along with tab Tetrabenazine titrated up to 25mg bd and improvement was noted with 4 weeks of treatment and assessment was done using PANSS.Conclusion: -This patient presented with motor tics along with positive symptoms of schizophrenia causing marked decline in his functioning and showed significant improvement with atypical antipsychotic and tab tetrabenazine.
