Abstract

Aims & Objectives: To study the clinical profile and out come of sick children of tropical fever Methods This was a prospective observational study conducted over the post monsoon months of august to November 2017 at the PICU of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital,which is a teaching tertiary care hospital in the northern part of India. Clinical features, laboratory parameters and final outcome were studied and analsed Results Out of a total of 201 patients admitted with diagnosis of tropical fever,45 (22.3%) got admitted in the PICU..Fever,pain abdomen and vomiting were the most common presenting symptoms.Bleeding at presentation was seen in 28.8% children,shock in 73.3%,ascites in 46.6%,respiratory complications in 42.2% and anemia in 66.6%.The underlying etiology was dengue fever(33.3%),scrub typhus(6.6%),malaria(4.4%), leptospirosis(4.4%) and swine flu(2%).Out of 45 children,10(22.2%) died,33 (73.3%) were transferred to ward and 2 (4.4%) left against medical advice. Conclusions During the post monsoon months there is a surge in the patients of tropical fever.Some of these patients are sick and if managed in PICU with standard protocols,many of them can be saved.
