Abstract

P1425 Citation: Atherosclerosis Supplement 2009, Vol. 10, Issue 2 ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AND ANTI-OXIDATIVE EFFECTS OF VITAMIN E-COATED MEMBRANE DIALYZER IN CHRONIC HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS D Kirmizis, A Papagianni, A-M Belechri, G Efstratiadis, E Alexopoulos, D Memmos University Department of Nephrology, Hippokration General Hospital, Thessaloniki Aim: To investigate the effects of the use of vitamin E-coated membrane dialyzer (VEM) on markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients. Patients-Methods: 35 patients (19 males, mean age 55±16 years) were dialyzed for 6 mts using a hollow fiber VEM dialyzer (VEM group). 25 ageand sex-matched HD patients (12 males, mean age 6±213 years) were dialyzed for the same period using al lowor medium-flux dialyzer as before their inclusion in the study (controls). Serum TAS was measured by RANDOX assay, TBARS by TBARS assay, CRP by nephelometry, IL-6, sICAM-1, sVCAM-1 and sEselectin and plasma oxLDL by ELISA. Results: In the VEM group, a significant decrease in CRP (p=0.02) and IL-6 (p=0.02) was observed at 3 mts compared with baseline. At 6 mts a significant decrease was noticed in CRP (p=0.004), IL6 (p=0.004) and sICAM-1 levels (p=0.04), as well as a tendency for decrease in sVCAM-1 and sE-selectin (p=0.6 & p=0.2, respectively), a significant reduction in TBARS (p=0.04) and oxLDL (p<0.001) and an increase in TAS (p=0.005). In contrast, compared with baseline, no significant changes were observed at 6 mts in any of the study parameters in the control group. Conclusions: In HD patients, a 6-mts use of VEM dialyzers exerted primarily anti-inflammatory effects which were followed by anti-oxidative effects. The observed decrease in the markers of oxidative stress is probably, at least in part, secondary to the improvement of endothelial function and the decrease in LDL oxidation.
