Abstract
Aims & Objectives: In 2015, the PICU relocated to a new purpose-built hospital. The Open-plan PICU changed from 21-beds to 24-beds into three 8-bedded PODs, which created challenges for communication and teamwork. POD-specific team safety huddles were proposed as a solution. Surveys to evaluate staff perceptions before-and-after a pilot study of safety huddles was undertaken. Methods The baseline survey occurred over two weeks. POD-specific safety huddles were implemented and the follow-on survey was repeated after six weeks. The surveys included a mix of qualitative and quantitative questions [Graph 1, 2], and fields for free text comments. The surveys were publicised via e-mail, staff notices and social media. The data was collected and analysed using SurveyMonkey Results 85 staff[51%] completed the pre-survey. 80% felt that handover of all patients was un-necessary. 72% agreed that focused POD safety huddles would be more beneficial. 62 staff[37%] completed the post-survey. They reported some inconsistency in how the POD huddles had occurred, but overall 45% agreed that team-working and communication improved, although 21.3% remained unsure. Staff perceived that patient safety (54%) and professionalism(56%) improved. Post pilot, there was mixed opinion about continuing with safety huddles, 50% wanted to continue with many suggestions for improvement. 29% didn’t want change and 20.9% were undecided. Conclusions Initially the POD safety huddles showed improvements in communication, professionalism and team-working. However there were inconsistencies in delivery. A process for improvement with staff engagement resulted in staff motivated to perfect the process. Further assessment over a longer timeframe is required to assess the impact of this implementation
