Abstract

The Increasing role of interventional radiologist has increased to the demand for their knowledge in long term patient management, replacing their role as simple proceduralists. Peripheral intervention is commonly performed by many interventionalists. Knowledge in would healing is essential in providing comprehensive care to the patient. We will discuss the many ways of safe and effective wound healing from the preparatory phase, to closure, as well as focus on adjunctive treatment. Many useful overt-the-counter as well as prescription therapies will be discussed with a review of the supporting literature. We discuss the effectiveness of therapies in various stages of wound healing. Irrigation, topical antiseptic, debridement, and wound closure are important steps in wound healing. We will discuss cost effective methods including hypo-allergenic tape, petroleum jelly, sun screen,, steroid injections, and topical onion extract (Moderma) in management of patients of ulcers related to peripheral vascular disease. Enzymatic debridement and hyperbaric oxygen are promising advances in therapy. Discussion will center around the basis of these therapies in terms of mechanism and action and clinical efficacy. Comprehensive medical care is essential in establishing rapport between interventional radiologists and the patient. Emphasis on management in addition to treatment of various disease processes including peripheral vascular disease is essential. Our discussion regarding the various treatment strategies in various stages of wound healing will give interventionalists the arsenal to further decrease dependence on interdisciplinary fields as well as provide safe and cost-effective care for their patients.
