Abstract

Approximately 25% of heart attacks or sudden cardiac deaths occur in individuals NOT at high risk of such events according to conventional risk factor-based assessment. A low ankle-brachial index (ABI), elevated plasma fibrinogen and C-reactive protein (CRP) have been shown to be associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, comparable data have not been reported for prevalence of abnormal ABI, fibrinogen and CRP among those not considered at high risk for CV events.
