Abstract

Abstract In response to a year-long investigation of cancer among the homeless in Birmingham, AL, this presenter created an education program called “Street Smarts.” Findings from a focus group consisting of homeless women diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer revealed competing values (poor self-esteem and body image, limited health care resources, etc.) preventing individuals in this population from seeking diagnosis or treatment for cancer, even when free-of-charge options are available. Street Smarts brings together members of this underserved community for a day of pampering while educating them about breast cancer screening and health care alternatives. The program is funded in partnership with the North Central Alabama Susan G. Komen Foundation. Citation Format: {Authors}. {Abstract title} [abstract].
