Abstract
Abstract Malignancy of the breast is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women globally. Feasibility of breast cancer prevention is illustrated by clinical success with SERMs and aromatase inhibitors for ER+ breast cancers. However, a clinically viable preventive intervention targeting ER-negative breast cancers is still lacking. Constituents of Ayurvedic medicine, which has been practiced in India for thousands of years, continue to draw attention for identification of novel small molecules potentially useful for prevention of chronic diseases including cancer. This presentation summarizes efficacy data, molecular targets, and biomarkers of mammary cancer prevention by a small-molecule steroidal lactone (withaferin A) derived from an Ayurvedic medicinal plant (Withania somnifera).
