Abstract

The relationship between Theosophy and modern art is fascinating and complex. This chapter focuses primarily upon the genesis of abstract art, its form, and the purpose of art. As Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian and Frantisek Kupka are the most well-known abstract pioneers to be involved with Theosophy, they serve as illustrative cases of the role Theosophy played in abstract art. Kupka's visions and mediumistic experiences resonated with Theosophical theories of astral vision and the astral world. The need for a new language of form for expressing the spiritual message of Theosophy was also felt by female artists, Hilma af Klint being a prime example. The visual arts of Western Europe have been discussed in the chapter, but Eastern European artists and North American artists, as well as the performing arts and music also enjoyed fruitful relationships with Theosophy.
