Abstract

Bisphosphonates, a medication class that inhibits the resorptive action of osteoclasts, represent the most prescribed medications for the management of osteoporosis. They are also used to treat pathologic hypercalcemia, Paget’s disease and bony metastasis. Oral therapy can be locally irritating and not indicated in patients with gastrointestinal pathology. For these patients, zoledronic acid is preferred as it is given via an annual intravenous infusion. Common side effects include transient hypocalcemia, acute phase reaction symptoms such as myalgias, arthralgias, and fatigue.
