Abstract

Introduction: TMS parameter selection is a vexing issue for researchers and clinicians. Ideally, we could select personalized sets of TMS parameters and targets to address specific goals. In practice, only a few useful forms of TMS have been discovered. The primary issue is that we do not have a general understanding of how changing TMS parameters changes the effects of stimulation. For instance, if we applied TMS at a random amplitude, frequency and cortical location, no existing model would predict the likely effect on brain or behavior. A major impediment to developing this understanding, is thinking of TMS sequences as the important unit of study. We should develop methods that allow us to design optimal TMS to move individuals to target brain and behavioral states.
