Abstract
Background and aims: Prolonged sedation in PICU may be difficult because of tolerance. Aims: To report experience with sevoflurane sedation delivered by AnaConDa® in children with tolerance to intravenous sedatives. Methods: Twenty-one children in PICU with tolerance to intravenous sedatives were switched to sevoflurane sedation by AnaConDa® placed in inspiratory limb of ventilator (weight<30kg) or at Y-piece (weight>30kg). The entidal-sevoflurane concentration (ETsevo) was titrated to 0.7% and adjusted by 0.1% for adequate sedation. Other sedatives were reduced or discontinued. Primary endpoint was % time with adequate sedation (BIS:40–80, COMFORT:17–26). Sevoflurane infusion rate, ETsevo, adverse events were documented. Approval of the National Medical Ethics Committee was obtained. Results:Table 1: Patient characteristics. amedian(range)Table 2: Sedation characteristics. *mean±SD,amedian(range), †% timeConclusions: Sevoflurane delivered by AnaConDa® is effective for sedation of critically ill children with tolerance to intravenous sedatives, especially during weaning from mechanical ventilation.
