Abstract

Latent autoimmune diabetes of adulthood (LADA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by adult onset of diabetes due to the presence of circulating autoantibodies. This disease is often challenging to diagnose due to the atypical age of onset. A known risk factor for LADA is a form of gestational diabetes (GDM) known as autoimmune gestational diabetes (AGD). AGD accounts for only 10% of GDM and carries a high risk for the development of LADA after pregnancy as its causative factor is islet cell autoantibodies that lead to the destruction of beta cells in the pancreas.
