Abstract
Decreased sperm counts and infertility are known complications following radiation therapy, but are not commonly seen as a side effect of radioactive iodine (RAI) I-131 treatment for thyroid cancer. When present after RAI I-131, these effects are usually transient and typically resolve within one year following treatment. It is rare for a patient to experience persistent azoospermia with commonly used thyroid carcinoma treatment doses, especially in the absence of fertility impairment prior to RAI exposure.
